It's true, the gameboy advance is the best console out today. It hearkens back to a time when the success of a game depended more on innovative gameplay concepts rather than how many polygons the models and environments were made of. If a game wasn't good, it just didn't do well.
Anyway I got all of those GBA games I ordered off ebay, and they're all awesome. Out of all of them, Advance Wars has probably gotten the most attention. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance kind of changed my opinion on strategy games, they are really awesome, and Advance Wars does it really well.
Final Fight one is better than the SNES version, it has all three characters from the arcade version, and the graphics are better than the SNES. The music sounds like NES music mixed with SNES music, which is pretty common in first generation GBA games (and some later ones, unfortunately), but since it's all remixes from the arcade version, it sounds good in a "NES/SNES remake" kind of way. They turned the subway level music into a techno song but it's still pretty good.
Aria of Sorrow is definitely the best castlevania on GBA. I don't think I'll be able to play Harmony of Dissonance anymore after getting this. The gameplay is closer to Symphony of the Night, the main character fights with knives/swords instead of a whip. The level designs are better than Harmony of Dissonance, it's hard to explain why... they're just more clever with utilizing special abilities and stuff, that's always a plus. The monster soul system is really cool too, and not complicated at all. The complicated card combination system from Circle of the Moon kind of turned me off, I like my special abilities to be simple to understand and execute... that's just a preference of mine though, some people like the complicated stuff and that's why many people say Circle of the Moon is the best GBA castlevania. Graphically and Musically, Aria of Sorrow is a lot better than Harmony of Dissonance. The music in HoD (i'm going to start using acronyms now) sounded almost completely like NES/gameboy music. It was probably the game's weakest point. Aria of Sorrow's music is great and sounds more like a SNES than NES. What an awesome game.
Megaman Zero 3, I haven't played it that much. From what I've played, the graphics and sound are great, sometimes seeming closer to Playstation quality than SNES quality. It's pretty difficult, but not insanely difficult like some of the Megaman X games. The main thing I didn't like was the storyline. I don't play megaman games to read stories, I play them to crush. I don't care about robot #1 betraying robot #2 or whatever, I just want to kill them with my gun. The intro to this game makes it seem like it's going to be an RPG because there is so much text and talking and cutscenes. You also have to play as Zero instead of Megaman and that's kind of lame too. Bass was the coolest Megaman character though, he could shoot in eight directions, and double jump. He was almost perfect.
Posted by at May 26, 2005 02:14 AMGBA is great, I too have always felt that games created on quality/story development and fun are much better than games that are rushed out for their graphics. Working at Gamestop has made me realize that "our" generation is the last to think so. Some kids came in whom have never played ff3 and don't want to because its on an old system and the graphics suck, and the kids are getting so stubern now that even Final Fantasy 7 sucks..........which is just unheard of. This kid went on that the blocky polygon graphics bug him to much, and that those games didnt get good till ff8.............fucker.
But yeah, GBA is awesome, I wish they would make a FFTA 2 or something along the lines of that.
Posted by: Nick at May 26, 2005 11:35 AMI had Megaman Zero 3 but it was pretty hard. After playing it a few weeks I only had 1 boss beaten.
I like GBA a lot but my money would be on SNES for best system honestly. So many memories.
yay for GBA and Advance Wars. I'll have to start playing mine again and see how much I can do. We'll have to play against each other on that game sometime!
Posted by: JP at May 26, 2005 04:55 PMthe gba is like the spirit of SNES brought into a newer and better body, you can't compare the SNES to the gba, but out of all the consoles out now that are still doing well, gba is best
Posted by: joe at May 27, 2005 01:44 AMI wish I had more time to play my GBA, but it is definitely a great console. I like FFTA, but it gets repetitive after a while. Just battling and adding new locations to the map. I'm only 10 hours in so maybe I need to give it more time? I definitely need to get some games for my GBA; I've been looking for Super Mario World but haven't been able to find it.
Posted by: HardwareGuy at May 27, 2005 11:51 PMErik, I have super mario world at work. I used to have it because I bought it with my gbasp but traded it in when I traded in my gbasp.
Posted by: Token at May 28, 2005 01:35 AMI have mario here too, i could get my discound but its still like 20 bucks cause its popular, we have all the advance marios. So if you want me to bring home 1 2 or 3 call me before wed night.
Posted by: Nick at May 28, 2005 02:58 AMebay is the only way i'm ever going to buy gba games from now on
Posted by: joe at May 28, 2005 02:09 PMWhat kind of deals did you get on your games?
Lame, I checked today at work and the super mario we had was Super Mario 3, not world. I guess we sold it. And the castlevania we had was Circle of the Night(...or moon...I forget).
Posted by: Token at May 30, 2005 03:01 PMcircle of the moon is really good, but I wouldn't pay over 15 bucks for it... but right now I wouldn't pay over 15 bucks for any gba game, maybe unless it just came out
