I'm having serious doubts on getting FFXI. I've played FFXI and it's a great game, but even while playing it I had doubts about the combat system and how long it would last before getting immensely boring. It happens to EVERY MMORPG out there, it's great at first, but then gets immensely boring. And the combat system in FFXI doesn't help, because it's basically a glorified version of Everquest combat. You walk up, start attacking (game auto-attacks for you after that), and then launch spells or special attacks whenever they become available. This is Everquest combat. It is also what made me quit Everquest and stick with Asheron's Call for close to four years.
The zoning system, also, is annoying. There's nothing I hate more than long loading times between areas, and FFXI has them. When you're walking out of town to the field outside, there's a "Loading, please wait" message, and it stops. Then you wait for a minute, then you appear. Everquest.
Then there's the fact that you can only have one character and the worldpass thing. This is bad. Nick, you can leave a comment saying "There's no reason to have more than one character!", but guess what, there IS a reason to have more than one character. It's called diversity in play style, to keep the game from becoming incredibly stale. Every time I would think of this, I would try to suppress it by convincing myself that there's no point to needing more than one character. But I'm not going to fool myself any longer. Multiple characters isn't something you should pay extra for, it should be a PART OF THE GAME FROM THE START. Square's already ripping you off enough charging 13 bucks a month, but then they have the fucking balls to charge extra money for something that's free in every other game of the same genre to ever come out.
Also, the fact that stuff cannot be dropped on the ground. If you drop something, it disappears completely. This is a major turn-off for me, because it doesn't make me feel like I'm a character in a world. It makes me feel like I'm a virtual character in a virtual world, and that's not something I like in a MMORPG. I liked AC a lot, because if you shot an arrow at something and missed, the arrow would stick in the ground. You could go up to that individual arrow and pick it up, put it in your quiver, and have another arrow. If you dropped a piece of armor, that piece of armor would lay on the ground. Drop a sword, that sword lies on the ground. Come on Square. Why are you charging 13 dollars a month? Don't even say it's to maintain your servers efficiently, because compared to games like AC (10 dollars a month), your servers are underworked because of the lack of ANYTHING in the world but characters, monsters, and the levels they walk around in.
All of that aside though, FFXI is going to be the best game out there for a while... until WoW comes out.
Posted by at October 15, 2003 03:42 PMi also had such doubts about the game. perhaps my doubts were a little less analytical but they were there. im still excited about the game. i mean ill buy it and play it until it does become utterly mundane or something better and more worth my time comes out. but i am waiting eagerly for the WOW beta. im telling you i still think its going to be about the best MMORPG to date. but hey FFXI may be awesome too. im willing to overlook its shortcomings as long as the story keeps me involved and it doesn't take forever to level up like in everquest.
Posted by: josh at October 15, 2003 04:14 PMyeah, i see your point joe.
anyway
fyi post
mt upgraded to 2.64. that is all.
Joe, one time you told me that you didnt care that you could only have one character, because with one player, you can have any class you want, in any combonation. So, each time you switch classes, its like a new character. But im only telling you what you told me.
Otherwise, im looking very forward to this game, and i will buy it. It's funny how excited you once were about this, stating that you were going to buy a new computer so you could play it(i know for many other reasons as well). Also, you had that fund going to save your money to purchace it.... i thought you wanted this game?
Posted by: Nick at October 16, 2003 01:32 PMread the last line of the post again nick
And also actually read what's within the paragraphs. I was trying to convince myself that one character for 12 dollars a month ISN'T a ripoff. The problem is, it IS a ripoff.
Square is charging 13 bucks a month for no reason at all. The servers probably don't have NEARLY as much stress as games like Asheron's Call, because of the fact that:
1. You can only have one character
2. They plop you on any fucking server they want
3. Objects can't be dropped, therefore there's no server load whatsoever dedicated to stuff on the ground.
They should definitely not be charging 13 dollars a month for this. 10 dollars a month AT THE MOST. AT THE MOST. There's 10 dollars a month games that require MUCH more server maintenance than FFXI.
Please don't let your love for squaresoft prevent you from realizing the truth.
Posted by: joe at October 16, 2003 03:21 PMDamn, you are harsh. I belive that they are charging what is needed to run the servers. They had huge problems in japan when they first started out, and im the price is higer here, or went up, because of that. 13 dollars, a rip off? I dont think so, i know i would pay more. Sure call me a fanboy, thats what i am. I will agree, that if we are paying more money that if we are going to pay more money for this game, than others, then small things like what server you want to play on, should be a choice. As well as the one character thing, even though, i only need one character. Im hardly going to have time for just one.
Posted by: Nick Huber at October 16, 2003 04:35 PMwell if its an consolation (sp?) THE FIRST MONTH IS FREE, INCLUDING UP to 15 CHARACTER!!! hahaha, kinda pointless, then they charge you after that trail month... bah.
Posted by: Nick Huber at October 16, 2003 06:07 PMThat's a pretty nice scheme... get somebody to start up 15 characters on the first free month, and then when they start charging, if the person hasn't deleted those characters they have a nice 30 dollar bill for that month (that will make them delete)
Even though the graphics in the game are better than all of the other online RPG's out there, that has absolutely nothing to do with the bandwidth required to run the servers. I would assume that FFXI requires very low bandwidth compared to most other MMORPG's because of its lack of details like being able to drop stuff on the ground. And then the fact that you can't do other stuff like jump, that would probably make the bandwidth requirement even lower. That's what the money is going to, and other games charge *less* money for *more* bandwidth and *more* characters.
When I pay monthly for a game, I really like to feel like I'm getting my moneys worth. This is one of the main reasons I stuck with Asheron's Call for so long. I honestly think that one character on one server for 13 dollars a month is getting my moneys worth.
But honestly, I get very critical about stuff before I purchase them. This is why I don't buy a lot of games, I need to feel like I have a good reason to buy them. I'm definitely going to buy and play FFXI, but sticking with it after other games come out is a different case... If WoW is better, I'll drop FFXI and go to WoW. And from what I've been reading, WoW seems like it's going to be better than FFXI.
Squaresoft releases good quality games, but they've also got their Unlimited Sagas. Do you recall Blizzard releasing any Unlimited Sagas?
Posted by: joe at October 16, 2003 06:35 PMTrue but how many games has Blizzard released over a specfic period. If they were knocking out games, 1o a year, then your going to have a few bag eggs. This is almost better, because i know a blizzard game will be good, 99%. But bad eggs are bound to happen when more games are coming out per year. Blizzard and Square are both good company's and im sure WoW will be a good game, comparible to FFXI, im sure. But, i dont have the money or time to play both, so, unless WoW is AMAZING, and BLOWS ME AWAY, and its something better than ive ever seen, ill just stick with one MMORPG. I hope i get into the beta, that would be awesome. Either way, the next year is going to be a good year, of gaming.
Posted by: Nick Huber at October 16, 2003 08:00 PMWhat if it's better than FFXI though? Or are you saying FFXI is amazing and blows you away? I mean, I think FFXI is really fun to play, but it definitely doesn't blow me away.
I hardly doubt that WoW will be even close to a bad egg.
read the faq.

No zones (one giant, seamless world), places from old warcraft games that you can visit, instanced dungeons (creates a private dungeon only your group can explore whenever you go into dungeons)
cool shit
Posted by: joe at October 16, 2003 08:48 PMi think perhaps both of you have overlooked certain other points that will make the game good or not. such as : story, ease and diversity or leveling, new content, etc. i mean you can't deny that all FF games pit you in battles where you repeatedly attack or use spells to kill an enemy. it won't be much different in FFXI except it will happen in real time with the possibility of other characters attacking at the same time. also, as long as it doesn't take a ludacris amount of time to level up (like everquest) and battles are relatively diverse, the game wont get boring really fast. but thats a big "might".
however, i still stick by my original assesment that WOW will be better than FFXI. FFXI just never seemed quite right from the moment i heard it was going to be online. squaresoft makes hella awesome single to 2 player console games but as far as online goes they're amateurs.
like i said to joe yesterday, it just seems like FFXI is taking the most recent MMORPG trends/ideas and tweaking them to typical square quality, whereas WOW seems as if it is trying to pioneer and vastly improve upon the genre. either way i will be interested to see how well FFXI does with me and others.
as for the price, yeah its way too high. joes probably right about the bandwidth and server matinence. i guess we're just paying for that pretty Square-Enix logo.
Posted by: josh at October 16, 2003 11:57 PMYou know what I think! I think the Ninjai: The Little Ninja kicks everythings butt!!! and if you haven't watched them yet, you're losers, until you do watch them, and if you've watched them, and not commented on it, then you're a loser again, until you comment on it.
Oh, and as far as FFXI goes, since Joe is the coolest Joe I know, he's clearly right.
oooooo, and Nick, I put your sister in the freezer today, didn't get to turn the freezer over though, too many hot dog cases in there, got two pictures, I might not be lazy, and upload them.
