Network Abuse

Wednesday, November 26th, 2003

I just disabled the kazaa port in hopes it will slow down the bandwidth usage (kazaa will port hop to port 80, the web surfing port).

I do not plan on re-enabling it until i am home because it had the cable modem completely saturated.

work is not as cool as lan

Wednesday, November 26th, 2003

I am currently at work, all alone as usual. bleh. I want to go back home =(

LAN is in full force and we need to take up collections for some food and for table / switch donations. Erik took one for the team and purchased 2 five port switches.

30 a piece (correct me if i am wrong) x 2
60 bucks

i spent 75 on a table, if i could get half the money back (40 bucks or so) that would be AWESOME!

soo, all the fair langoers, if you could shoot mr. beach a 5-10 dollar bill i am sure he would really appreciate it.

also, if you could shoot 5-10 towards me plus whatever we figure in for food (no more than 5 bucks since this is a short lan) that would be cool as well.

The garage has been treating us well, it may actually get warm out there. Best of all, we have PLENTY of space!

I hope everyone, langoers and not, have a very safe, wonderful, and goot eatin thanksgiving. Good luck to those in college with your finals, and I hope everyone is looking forward to winter break.

It’s Cold Outside

Monday, November 24th, 2003

Everyone is in the garage, it was a tad bit cold last night but i have space heater(s) on the way now. Before we get all hot and heavy into the lan this week i have a couple of things i need to mention.

1. we need to keep the house clean. one reason for being in the garage is so we are out of the way, less noticable, don’t tear stuff up. if you guys sleep inside or spend the night after you wake up you need to put ALL YOUR STUFF AWAY. if you slept on the couch pull out bed you need to put it back, replace the cushions, blankets WHEN YOU WAKE UP!
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CLOTHES OR STUFF OUT. After i leave work i am heading home to clean the house and put all the shit that i left out away. I will also devise a place to store everyones stuff they aren’t using, such as clothes, duffel bags, etc.

Please use common sense in what needs to be kept clean. If someone where to walk into my house i don’t want them to think that there are 6-8 people college aged adults sleeping / living there.

2. We will work on food details soon –> TONIGHT (for this lan and next).

3. i plan on getting some carpet tonight, should make the place more homey.

4. while it IS cold out there right now (my shitty thermo. read 59.9 degrees) that isn’t too bad since there is only a metal door between us and the north. More people + space heater = solution i hope.

Thanksgiving LAN 2003

Tuesday, November 18th, 2003

Here is the post (Nick) everyone was waiting for, LAN info!!! I have a number of points to address so let me get started.

I plan to get things rolling on the 27th (that’s thanksgiving). I thought that starting things out late thanksgiving night would be best because that would give everyone time to spend time with their families before becoming (anti)-social at my house.

There are a couple of things that need to happen for this to be fun / successful / etc.

Needs

Carpet — this one is a big deal, i want to lay some cheap ass carpet on the floor in the garage so the floor won’t be ice cold, i need help in obtaining it. either a trip somewhere to find some beat up old carpet pieces or otherwise should do fine since the colors don’t have to match, we need enough to cover the floor.

Tables — this speaks for itself, hopefully we can use the tables we usually do (minus the dining room table, that is not getting moved outside.

Duration / Location — this is going to be in the garage at my house, starting thanksgiving late and going till sunday night, those that are from the tulsa area are welcome to hang out for any length of time after, i am not going to run you out of my garage ;-).

Prequel — this should be a prelude to the winter time lan which will last quite a bit of time, hopefully this test run of “the garage” will prove that its an ideal locatoin.

James’s Dad — since we will probably be stealing his parking place we have to cover his demands if he makes any. This should just pertain to if it snows for some reason he better have his truck ready to go as if it were in the garage. This includes getting out of the driveway, snow scrapped off, etc.

Possible problems with the garage
Heat — hopefully this can be fixed by all the computers running, if not we can stick a space heater in the room and it should fix the problem. I will be sure to also find a way to run a lan cable down from the jjservar linux machine to us to give us internet access.

Things made better by the garage
Noise Level — we can be quite a bit louder in the garage, we won’t be disturbing anyone in the house or otherwise, noise really hasn’t been too terrible of a problem in the past but this should make things less stressful on my father.

More people — garage can handle a lot more people.

Mom can’t complain — altho i know how most of you feel about the mother, she is still the mother and my father tends to listen to her a tad bit too much sometimes, she can’t say a WORD about us being in the garage cuz hey, if we wreck it… whats going to happen? not to mention no one will “see” the lan if they walk in the house. bingo. problem solved.

Messy — we can trash the garage, end of point. I am NOT PROMOTING LAZINESS / being a sloth!! Some of you need to be better about keeping your area in tip top shape (myself included) so please try to keep your trash thrown away.

Dad — we will be out of my dad’s way completely, the only thing we are taking away is his parking place, not a huge deal and is better than taking over the front half of his downstairs.

So there you have it, post ideas and comments in the comments and give me some feedback. I will write a small web-form for people to fill out for those that are coming, EVERYONE IS INVITED!!! i would love to see everyone attend, as well as those that aren’t full time lanners such as people i am not incredibly familiar with. the more the merrier.

Everyone check back later for a webform and be sure to tell all your friends.

Letting everyone know that i really haven’t dropped off the planet, just have myself set in some life “patterns”. My life has been completely absorbed by what little socializing i have left with my close friends and the usual work / eat / sleep routine. While at times its nice to have stuff on autorepeat / autopilot / however it has gotten to the point where it would be nice to have something extra to spice life up. maybe i can find that soon.

ff xi is wonderful, as usual. no surprises there. i will try to write a lengthy review whenever it’s had a couple more weeks to sink in. Everyone seems to enjoy it thusfar and i am glad we are all having a good time.

Those of you that were in game the other evening already know of what i am about to speak of but this is to let everyone else know. As most of you had noticed, turkey day is just around the corner and christmas time is short to follow. We all know what the holidays and winter break have provided in the past and this winter shall be no different, its three letter word season….

I intend to organize the longterm (winter break) in ways we have not tried before to see what happens, and to do so i will need some help and advice from anyone who is willing to provide such things. This includes acquiring certain things that are going to make the experience much more enjoyable. I will be in touch with some, and others can IM me to see whats going on and after i am aware of more details i will let everyone know.

One last thing, those in college i need to know winter break AND thanksgiving break schedules, post in the comments or IM me.

mmm weekends
