Suikoden III

ok, for those not familiar i am going to give this game a quick run down.

==> the gameplay / storyline / old school feel reminds me of final fantasy 6, mayyybee 7… but it feels more old school than that because as far as i can tell so far it is not set in modern times… more of a castle / horses type setting.

==> trinity site system *

==> 108 party members (holllllly crrrappppp)

==> chapter driven storyline

I think that covers the highlights of the game. The only thing that has really impressed me thusfar is the storyline and the method they go about telling it. The trinity site system that i refer to is in regards this…you see the start of this war (perhaps more?) from three different perspectives, a grassland boy, a woman soldier, and what appears to be a mercernary who knows more of what is going on behind the scenes. It is really neat because as you play you will come across the other characters and then when you go back and play the other character the same thing will happen but from a different side. Overall a very good translation and good plot development.

Here are some things you should not expect to see stand out well against the competition…
It doesn’t have Square composors (you know… Uematsu… or Yasunori Mitsudi).
Now i am not saying that the music SUCKS, but don’t expect chrono cross, xenogears/saga, final fantasy type tunes out of this game.
In retrospect some of the songs haven’t been too bad, a good example is the intro song that goes along with the anime lookin video. However i will still stand by my previous statement because there are some songs that are just horrible, if you play the game you will hear them.

Another case against the game is that the graphics and town settings are not too visual at all. This takes me back to Legend of Dragoon quality work. The settings look very flat, plain, and if there weren’t NPCs walking around you would think you were in a room full of cubes. Big disappointment after playing through titles with eye candy such as Final Fantasy X and Xenosaga.

Overall and thus far (about 7 hours in… finished each person’s chapter 1) I can tell this is going to be a good RPG despite the small setbacks, it has a classic game feel, the battle system is fun, and the storyline is intriguing. If anything else comes up before the game ends i will post more of my ideas, otherwise don’t expect to hear much more about it until i finish it.

    Suikoden 1 was the first RPG I played on PSone, and I thought it was really, really good… The story was probably the best pard. I haven’t played 3 yet, but hopefully it’s as good as the first one. And hopefully it’s not as short either, I made it to the boss of the game in the first one in about 23 hours, which isn’t very long for an RPG. Not to mention the fact that I got about 105 of the 108 characters in the first one during that 23 hour period. Still a good game though.
